Csilla Bíro awarded a UWE Enterprise Start-Up Scholarship

Congratulations to graduating MAMDP student Csilla Bíro who has been awarded a UWE Enterprise Start-Up Scholarship to help establish her own print studio and micro-press as a freelance artist.

In the new space Csilla will be making a small workshop space specialising in curiosity and vintage table top presses. It joins a tight-knit community of print studios and risograph studios in Bristoland includes Gestetner stencil duplicators made in the 1960s, older table-top manual duplicators from the 1920-40s, an Adana 8×5 table top press for letterpress work, typewriters, hand-bookbinding and pochoir stencil printing and small Victorian hand presses. The studio would have some space for hand-printing and bookbinding to complement the work on presses, and there will be an element of rescuing and repairing old presses and related tools, or repurposing them with more modern technology, finding a space for obsolete technology to be useful, and for using recycled materials (paper, old inks, building a relationship with local recycling businesses) wherever possible and safe to do so. The studio will develop small scale publishing and book arts projects.

Csilla says: Through my studies on the MA Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking course I have made lots of connections in the print and book arts world of Bristol. I would like to keep these relationships going and introduce more people to the untapped potential of analogue and obsolete machines – and to the joy of making something new and regaining some agency with the help of these old machines.
