For 2018, the World Book Night United Artists issued an invitation to read and respond to the short story ‘Watching God’ in the collection Three Moments of an Explosion by China Miéville. There were many ways in which readers could respond to the text, through word or image, bookbinding, or even raft building. An exhibition of the artworks created by 50 artists in Germany, Spain, Sweden, the UK and USA accompanies an artist’s book and video produced for World Book Night 2018.
The following MAMDP students and alumni contributed to the project: Angie Butler, Carmen Garaghon, Caroline Case, Cathey Webb, Charlotte Hall, Chrystal Cherniwchan, Corinne Welch, Gen Harrison, Kate Bernstein, Linda Parr, Miranda Harris, Ruth Broadway, Virginia Bridge, Zelda Velika.
With thanks to MAMDP alumna Rebecca Weeks for excursion guide duties, and North Somerset Council and Weston super Mare Library for filming/photography. Special thanks to Chrystal Cherniwchan for all her help on the project as a Professional Practice Placement at CFPR, including creating the Instagram page.
You can watch our video for World Book Night 23rd April 2018 here.
The artist’s book is published as a paperback ‘ur-text’ (23/04/18) in keeping with the contents of the town’s library. The title of our book is Their Eyes Were Watching God – the book searched for but never found.
