Programme
Thursday 12th May 2016, 10am – 3pm, OB16, Bower Ashton, Bristol

10:00am Introduction by Sarah Bodman, Senior Research Fellow, UWE

10:10am Sarah Duncan carried out an artist-in-residence at Kitt Peak National
Observatory, Arizona. While there she developed her research into the
night sky by working alongside the experienced astronomers, and
utilizing their powerful telescopes.

10:30am Jono Sandilands used the professional practice module to work
alongside commercial pinball manufacturing companies to learn new
skills and make valuable contacts for moving on with his project of
building a pinball machine in the final year of his MA.

10:50am Discussion and Questions

11:00am Break

11:20am Bridget Alexander participated in two activities that would address
some of the problems she identified within her practice. (Too much
research- not enough ACTION!) The first of these was to conduct a
residency in the contemporary art gallery Spike Island and the second
was to develop and run a number of workshops that would be
informed by the residency.

11:40am Stephanie Turnbull: As a collaborative printer Stephanie’s practice has
always focused on the technicalities of printmaking. The opportunity
to be taught pulp printing by Tim Mosely became the main focus of
her professional practice, which expanded into a six-week trip
exploring Australia’s print scene.

12:00pm Discussion and Questions

12:10pm A short film from Limerick Printmakers, Ireland ‘24 Hour Print
People’

12:30pm Lunch

1:45pm Aoife Barrett and Monika Rycerz co-founded the artist run space‘Unit 10’ in Bedminster as a social enterprise. As well as being a fine art workspace, Unit 10 is a
platform for local art and community needs. It is used as an exhibition space and hosts public art events aimed at engaging the local community.

2:05pm Charlotte Biszewski partook in a wide range of activities – a
demonstration of an inability to make a decision and a need to do
everything! Through taking on a volunteer illustration commission for
a local charity, to funding and building a portable print studio. After
this she decided to run away with the Circus! Charlotte will also speak
about her current print project, Bristol set in Print.

2:25pm Angie Butler, Artist & PhD. Researcher, CFPR, UWE. Printers, Pies
and Pages: Investigating the practice of the letterpress book

  1. A really excellent day. Thank you for Aoife for organising and to all the speakers for presenting. It was thought provoking, varied, interesting and enlivening. It got all the first year MA Print students thinking and talking about ideas for next years professional practice module. Thank you.
